Underwriting Assistant

The file arrives ready-made. The underwriter decides

When handling a quotation, most of the time is spent on data collection, not analysis. The Assistant gathers the facts, applies the latest version of your guidelines and produces a clear file highlighting discrepancies and points requiring a decision. Underwriters can respond quicker to your distribution networks, whilst maintaining the technical rigor.

Incoming quotation — distribution networks in real time
  • SME property damage — compliant with guidelines, proposed rate
  • Warehouse in a flood-prone area — referred to the underwriter

Speed and rigour

Respond quickly to your distribution networks, with all the necessary information to hand

At the peak of the renewal period, the time available per case is squeezed and missing information becomes an assumption. This is where discrepancies arise between assessed risk and assumed risk. Cases end up handled differently from one underwriter to another. On the contrary, a case that has already been assessed puts the whole team on the same page.

How it works

Four steps.
The final call rests with the underwriter

Each submission is categorised on arrival: within risk appetite, to be assessed, outside scope, with the reason stated. At peak renewal times, this enables high-margin new business to be assessed rather than letting it slip through.

Screening Risk appetite Documented reason

Actual business activity, sites and capital, claims history, external sources: everything is on a single page, with the source and date. Secondary sites, which are rarely visited, are analysed in the same way as the main site, even within a portfolio of several hundred addresses. If the assistant doesn't know something, it notes this: missing data remains displayed as such and is never assumed.

Multi-source Source & date Explicitly marked missing data

A rule amended by the technical department applies to the next case. Whether junior or senior, the same framework applies: decisions are standardised without uniformity of judgement.

Versioned guide Immediate distribution Consistency

The assistant proposes and explains. The underwriter makes the final decision and may deviate from the recommendation. The audit trail records the recommendation, the decision and the reason: a defensible case file, providing a detailed insight into the actual use of the guides.

Data not available

Claims history prior to 2021 missing from the submitted file.

What remains for the underwriter

  • Accept, reject, set a premium, impose a condition
  • Reject the assistant's conclusion, giving a one-line reason
  • Request further information from the broker, using a pre-formulated template
  • Escalate a case to the committee with the complete file

Disagreements between underwriters and the assistant are used to correct the rules, not the underwriters.

What underwriters have asked us never to do

Present an assumption as a fact

Each item is accompanied by its source and date; the absence of data is displayed as such.

Block a decision

The underwriter can override this; the tool records the reason rather than closing the door.

Add one more tool

The assistant appears in the existing workbench via API. No new screens to master.
